Location : Karol Bagh

Architect : Mohinder Singh

Built on the splendid PUSA road of Karol Bagh, is Mohinder Singh's residence. An architect himself, he has designed a couple more residences apart from his own and a hospital in the neighbourhood, many in the Streamline Moderne doctrine of Art Deco. Mohinder Singh’s father, Sardar Hardit Singh was a mistri himself and was instrumental in guiding the British architects and engineers on the construction of the Viceroy Estate. This perhaps influenced Singh, who self-learned design techniques and standards, without any formal training by referring to British Design and Construction manuals. Mohinder Singh worked as an independent engineer architect directly with the Municipality, and was an Associate Member of Society of Engineers. Constructed in what was known as the ‘best design’ in the late 30s, early 40s,  the residence, which now remains partially, the front half being sold and remodelled, is accessible from the rear.

Through the gates a scenic imagery is created, of two curved masses with verandahs on either side meeting a vertical tower. The residence has a very unique curving facade with a rising staircase tower sandwiched within its centre having a conical flat roof. One can spot continuous eyebrows enhancing its curving exteriors, and ornamental cement jaali work. The staircase is particularly in Art Deco style, with angularly curved bending edges, inside the conical tower, in grey terrazzo, and a black polished concrete band on its edges, creating a carpeted effect all through to the entrance of the building.

Window Grills

Often seen casted in cement / metal are window grills with motifs and symbols, such as sun burst, swan or name initials of owners, adding to the ornamentation of the buildings

Terrazzo Finish

A mix of Coloured cement with Terrazzo works adding to the details of craftsmanship within the style. Vibrant coloured floors were common to Art Deco interiors and coloured cement further enhanced the details.

Staircases

Staircases under Art Deco showcase simple clean flights, soffits which smoothly curved towards the subsequent floor, forming a pivotal space in the buildings
