HC Sen and Company

Dr H.C. Sen was the first allopathic doctor to Old Delhi who had a clinic and house at a rented space near fountain chowk, opposite Gurudrawa SisGanj and police station. Oral narratives suggest the plot belonged to Begum Samru and stood a modest double storey residence of the doctor. Dr Sen was known to greet and host many people from Calcutta, who’d arrive at the Old Delhi Train station. He even started his own pharmacy, selling his famous liver tonic. In between his residence and the Majestic cinema, Dr Sen established the Indian Medical Hall or IMH Press.  Later, the Dayals, an affluent family of advocates housed at Raja Jugal Kishore’s haveli at Chandni Chowk itself, bought the corner and reconstructed it to Shankar Terrace, a commercial complex. Dr Sen rented a part of the complex to house his clinic and pharmacy, which stood as a landmark even more prominent than the patrons of Shankar Terrace themselves. Dr Sen additionally bought a vast land at Ansari Road Daryaganj, where members of his family still stay. In light of his contributions to healthcare and the society, the road leading to the railway station from the Fountain Chowk is named Dr HC Sen Marg.
