Location : Rani Jhansi Road, Sadar Bazaar
Architect : Master, Sathe & Kothari Associates
Patron : Filmistan Company Limited
Filmistan stands with its flamboyant facade on Rani Jhansi road and Sadar Bazaar area. Filmistan Company Ltd. where the cinema takes its name from was a film production company originally from Bombay that expanded to Delhi with the opening of this theatre / exhibition space. It was shut down a few years ago but at one point it used to be one of the busiest theatres in Delhi. It was designed by M/s Master, Sathe & Kothari Associates, a practice formed by Bombay based architects Chimanlal Motilal Master, Laxaman Vishnu Sathe and Narendra K. Kothari.
The building totally stands out on a busy street for its ornamental and aerodynamic design of the vertical rising tower on one corner of the building, the bold curved edges, and the play of the subdued pastel orange with the bold blue. The colour composition of the facade very well synthesises the interplay of the vertical and horizontal elements along with the playful small-case typography. The dominant horizontality of the building borrows the simplicity of the Streamline Moderne style. The towering feature at the corner of the building with rings of cantilevered concrete projections certainly showcase an advancement in the construction trends of the time.
