Hindu Education Trust was established by Krishan Dass Gurwale at Kinari Bazar in Chandni Chowk. In 1908 the college was shifted to a building in Kashmiri Gate which was donated by Rai Bahadur Sultan Singh. Lala Shri Ram and Lala Jagan Nath were both members of the Hindu Education Trust. At the time of shifting to the current location at the University Enclave in the 1930s, the Trust was headed by Lala Shri Ram and Walter George was the architect commissioned, both were members of the Delhi Improvement Trust as well. Hindu College holds a special place in the time of the political discourse of the country against the British Raj, along with Stephens and Indraprastha college, voicing for Swaraj. Similar to St Stephen’s, Hindu also opted for a central rising tower which has a vertical slit chevron pattern jaali and louvre detail on all sides and an edged eyebrow at the top of the tower. The bottom of the tower has an interesting interplay of extruding curved projections that highlights the base. Similar to other contemporary colleges, Hindu also boasts a ‘H’ patterned jaali, cast in porthole windows, specially seen at the Science block. One can also observe similarities between Sujan Singh Park and the Hostel Block, both designed by the same architect.
