Lala Shri Ram, often quoted as the biggest industrialist Delhi had in the mid Twentieth century, is mostly credited for spearheading the Delhi Cloth and General Mills setup by his uncle and for his philanthropist work particularly in the educational sector. Shri Ram believed in reinforcing the health and education sector for the society and established colleges, Indraprastha College, Shri Ram College and Lady Shri Ram for women, in memory of his wife. Additionally, he served in the board of Trustees for Hindu and Ramjas as well. Lala Shri Ram also commissioned Mrs Girdhar Lall Maternity hospital, in honour of his mother and to provide modern healthcare facilities for all.
His farsightedness also made him a member of the Delhi Improvement Trust, heading conventions for the most important decisions for the city. A socialite and arts patron, Shri Ram made to the newspapers almost everyday for his contributions to the Trust or the city.
Lala Shri Ram shared a close bond with many of the city elites like Lala Ram Roop, Mayor Hansraj Gupta and Yogeshwar Dayal, while Architect Walter George, a fellow member of the Trust, commissioned designs for many of the buildings initiated by Lala Shri Ram.
